Ethiopian Airlines Orders 10 Boeing Freighters to Expand Africa's Largest Cargo Operation

Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for eight Boeing 777-8 Freighters and two 777 Freighters, expanding Africa's largest cargo operation with the next generation of widebody freight aircraft. The order pairs Boeing's proven 777 Freighter platform with the new 777X-derived 777-8F, which offers improved fuel efficiency and payload capacity.

Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the order as a significant milestone in strengthening the airline's cargo capabilities and supporting its expanding global network. Ethiopian Cargo has grown into one of the world's largest freight operations, leveraging Addis Ababa's geographic position as a hub connecting African, Middle Eastern, Asian and European markets.

The 777-8 Freighter is Boeing's newest cargo aircraft, based on the 777X airframe with composite wings, new engines and improved aerodynamics. For Ethiopian Airlines, the fleet addition addresses growing demand for air cargo services driven by e-commerce expansion across Africa and increasing trade volumes between the continent and Asia.

The deal also represents a significant vote of confidence in Boeing's freighter programme at a time when the manufacturer continues to rebuild its reputation following years of production and quality challenges. For the African aviation sector, the order underscores how Ethiopian Airlines has established itself as the continent's dominant carrier — and how Addis Ababa continues to strengthen its role as a global logistics hub.
