ISRO officials announced on October 5, 2026 that approximately 95% of the initial phase tests for India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme have been successfully completed.

The tests were conducted during the World Space Week Festival 2026 in Coimbatore, where ISRO also showcased its plans for the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, India's proposed national space station.

India's human spaceflight efforts are currently targeted for mid-2028, with the Gaganyaan programme designed to demonstrate the country's capability to independently send astronauts to low Earth orbit and return them safely.

ISRO has also demonstrated rendezvous, docking and undocking capabilities through its SpaDeX experiment, which are considered essential for future space station assembly and lunar missions.

The space agency is working on a national space station named Bharatiya Antariksha Station comprising five modules, with the first module expected to launch by the end of 2028.

World Space Week celebrations in Coimbatore included a three-day space expo organized by ISRO's Propulsion Complex in association with Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology.
