Joby Aviation Launches White House-Backed eVTOL Demonstration Flights Across Dallas–Fort Worth
In mid-September 2026, Joby Aviation launched a week of White House-backed electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) demonstration flights across the Dallas–Fort Worth region. Routes included flights to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The flights are part of Joby's 2026 Electric Skies Tour campaign and operate under the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), which allows operators to conduct commercial operations and demonstrations prior to full type certification.
Joby plans to follow the Texas demonstrations with a month-long, ten-state cross-country tour of its autonomous J208 aircraft — a modified Cessna 208B Caravan — to demonstrate technology for emergency response, commercial freight and defence logistics. The company has five conforming aircraft flying and twelve more in production, with type certification Stage 3 reported at 83 per cent complete on the Joby side and 77 per cent on the FAA side.
The demonstrations provide the FAA with real-world operational data at major commercial airports — a critical step for eventually integrating electric air taxis into congested urban airspace. Joby is targeting its first revenue flights before the end of 2026, a milestone that would make it one of the first eVTOL companies to carry paying passengers. Toyota has committed a $250 million direct investment expected to close in late 2026 or early 2027, along with a joint venture for high-volume production.
The broader advanced air mobility sector is gathering momentum. In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority is building multiple vertiports, with the first at Dubai International Airport already complete. In the UK, Vertical Aerospace opened a new eVTOL assembly centre at Cotswold Airport the same week. But commercialisation still hinges on completing certification and proving that electric air taxis can operate reliably and economically in everyday conditions — milestones that remain ahead.
