Particle M635e Achieves Skylo Certification for Satellite IoT Connectivity
Particle by Digi announced that the Particle M635e has earned Skylo certification, meaning the module has been tested and validated for interoperability with Skylo's standards-based Non-Terrestrial Network service, which delivers satellite connectivity over geostationary satellites using the 3GPP NTN standard. The announcement was carried on September 28.
The M635e is a multi-network connectivity module: it combines Skylo satellite NTN service with global LTE-M cellular, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth Low Energy. The idea is that a device uses fast, low-latency cellular where towers exist and falls back to satellite messaging where they do not, from a single certified module.
For developers, Particle is framing this as a shortcut to market. Teams can prototype on the Particle Muon single-board computer and carry the certification work into production, since compliance, carrier acceptance, and NTN interoperability have already been verified for the module. OEMs integrating the M635e and its supplied antenna can also apply for their own Skylo certification through a product-equivalency process. 'Satellite connectivity has long been the missing piece for truly global IoT deployments,' said Mike Rohrmoser, vice president at Particle by Digi.
Certification is an interoperability validation, not a performance guarantee. Real-world throughput, latency, and coverage over satellite links still depend on Skylo's network conditions, antenna design in the final product, and regulatory approvals in each market where the device ships.
Why it matters: a large share of IoT deployments, from agricultural sensors to shipping containers to utility meters in rural areas, sit outside cellular coverage. Standards-based NTN lets those devices roam between terrestrial and satellite networks without proprietary radios, and pre-certified modules remove one of the costlier and slower steps from satellite product development.
