Tanzania's Minister for Livestock and Fisheries announced on October 5, 2026 that the country is spearheading regional ocean conservation initiatives in preparation for the Nairobi Convention meeting scheduled for October 6-9.

The upcoming Conference of Parties is expected to adopt decisions on marine pollution control, illegal fishing prevention, climate action and blue economy project financing.

Tanzania cited mangrove restoration in the Rufiji Delta as a key initiative supporting fish breeding grounds, reducing coastal erosion and protecting resources vital to coastal communities.

Efforts to reduce plastic waste, wastewater and other marine pollution sources have contributed to improved marine and coastal environments across the region.

The Nairobi Convention brings together 10 contracting parties to address marine environmental challenges through joint action and coordinated policy implementation.

Both Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi are expected to attend the convention, with the President opening proceedings and the Zanzibar President officiating at the closing.
