US Army Names Five Winners in xTechHumanoid Competition for Military Robotics

Robotics2026-10-02·4 min read

The US Army has selected five winners in its xTechHumanoid competition, an initiative to evaluate whether commercial humanoid robot technologies could be adapted for military operations. ACES Group, IHMC Robotics, Hydroplane Limited, Ras Labs and Velocity Explorations were chosen from an initial pool of 103 submissions, after nine finalists demonstrated their systems at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia in September 2026.

IHMC Robotics presented the most complete platform: a humanoid robot called Alex featuring impact-resilient actuators, ballistic protection elements, and a hybrid control system that combines AI-based autonomy with human operator oversight. Other winners focused on component technologies including tactile sensors, power systems and command-and-control architectures rather than full humanoid platforms.

The competition reflects growing military interest in humanoid form factors, driven by the idea that robots shaped like humans can navigate environments built for people — doorways, stairs, vehicles, and tools — without requiring infrastructure modifications. The Army's approach through the xTech programme, which connects military requirements with commercial innovation, suggests the service is looking to leverage private-sector robotics advances rather than develop bespoke military platforms from scratch.

The winners will receive further development support, though the Army has not committed to procurement timelines. The programme sits within a broader defence-sector trend: multiple nations are evaluating humanoid robots for logistics, hazardous material handling and potentially combat support roles, though fielded military humanoids remain years away from operational deployment.
