ABB Launches Infinitus, a Source-to-Rack DC Power Portfolio for AI Data Centers
ABB announced Infinitus, a portfolio of direct current power solutions aimed at the growing electrical demands of AI data centers. The company describes it as the industry's first source-to-rack DC portfolio, meaning it covers the power path from the grid connection down to the individual computing racks rather than a single component in that chain.
The portfolio spans five areas: power conversion, distribution, protection, and cooling, supporting both pure DC and hybrid AC/DC architectures. ABB highlights solid-state transformers as a breakthrough element, designed to replace heavier traditional transformers, cut conversion losses, and shrink the physical footprint of electrical rooms. Less conversion and less equipment means more of the incoming power actually reaches the computing hardware.
The strategic context is NVIDIA's push toward 800-volt DC power distribution for its next generation of AI infrastructure, part of a collaboration ABB and NVIDIA announced in October 2025 targeting gigawatt-scale AI facilities where individual server racks approach one megawatt. ABB says it brings more than 25 years of DC systems experience and over 700 related patents to the effort, and expects other energy-intensive industries to follow the same transition.
This is a product launch, not a field-proven deployment. ABB's efficiency and footprint claims will need to be demonstrated in real facilities at scale, and the data center industry has only begun piloting 800 VDC architectures. How quickly operators adopt DC distribution, and whether it interoperates smoothly with existing AC-based plants, remains to be seen.
Why it matters: electricity is now the binding constraint on AI expansion, and every AC-to-DC conversion step wastes energy and floor space. If source-to-rack DC delivery works as described, it changes data center electrical design fundamentally, and it reshapes which equipment makers win the enormous buildout of AI infrastructure now underway.
