UNDP and GSMA Partner to Scale African-Led AI Innovation
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSMA have announced a strategic partnership to strengthen Africa's artificial intelligence ecosystem and accelerate the deployment of African-led AI solutions, including African language AI.
The partnership brings together the GSMA's mobile industry expertise and networks with UNDP's development programmes and innovation platforms to support African-led AI innovation.
Through the UNDP timbuktoo initiative, which is empowering African innovators to scale development solutions, the two bodies will collaborate to improve access to compute infrastructure for priority AI pilots and connect African talent with real-world AI applications.
The partnership will also support the deployment of locally developed AI solutions and identify pathways for long-term sustainability and scale.
The effort dovetails with the GSMA's broader African-language AI work through ATLAS Umoja AI, launched alongside government and industry partners in July 2026, which assembles expertise and language data from across Africa to underpin AI services reflecting local needs.
This collaboration aims to overcome language and content barriers to digital inclusion across the continent.
